Drive between wild beaches, eucalyptus bush and sculpted granite rocks, then see endangered Australian sea lions up close in their natural home.

Off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island brings together open coastline, bushland and wildlife. At Remarkable Rocks, wind and sea have shaped huge granite boulders above the Southern Ocean. At Seal Bay, Australian sea lions rest on the sand; a guided beach walk lets you observe them in their own habitat.

Give yourself time to explore between those landmarks. Walk a stretch of coast, stop at a beach and follow the roads through the island’s changing landscapes. A few days here leave room for the places you came to see, and the stops you hadn’t planned.

When is a good time to go?

March–May brings mild autumn weather; September–November brings spring wildflowers. Summer, December–February, suits beach days. Winter, June–August, is cooler and greener. Choose the season for the kind of trip you want.

How long should I stay?

Allow at least three days for a first visit. Five gives you more room for the main sights and time between them.

How do I get there and around?

Travel via South Australia: take the ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, or fly from Adelaide to Kingscote. On the island, plan to drive or join a guided tour so you can explore beyond the arrival point.
